Whoever your Web Designer is/was may have (or may not have) done a good job at designing your website in an aesthetically pleasing way but 98% of them are clueless about how to build your website in a truly SEO Friendly way. This which actually much more important than having a fancy website because you can have the nicest/coolest site in the world but if no one can find it when they are searching for your product, services, or industry; it's not going to do you any good.
That is not meant to put your Web Designer down. It's just not their specialty. Most SEO Experts don't build websites. That's because Web Designers and SEO Experts are usually very different kind of people. Designers are very artistic and right brain dominant while SEO Experts tend to be more technical and left brain dominant. I happen to be one of those rare finds that actually enjoys both. Often in the process of doing this it's easier to start for scratch and make a whole new website for my clients because the work is often the same. This can be done though without changing the look and feel of your website at all though if you enjoy and are attached to the way it is now.
Let me put it this way...
Imagine you build race cars, and you know how to make them go really fast. Then image someone comes to you with a Cadillac or an Oldsmobile Station Wagon and says "make it go fast." You might be able to make it go fast but not nearly as fast as you could make it go if you had build the vehicle from scratch with the purpose of making it run fast. That is the best analogy I can think of to explain why it is so beneficial to have an SEO expert like myself build your website, assuming you can find one that actually builds websites like I do.
Not to toot my own horn but I've been in the industry for over 15 years and I have yet to meet anyone with my skills. There must be a few out there but I have never heard of them. In fact, a large percentage of those in my industry don't even do the work themselves and instead outsource most or all of the work to guys like me... (if they are luck enough to know guys like me). Outsourcing doesn't make them a bad company but unfortunately there are a lot of scandalous SEO companies in business so please do your homework to make sure they are on the up.

Online Advertising? What do I know?
As Owner and Founder of JEDI WEB SERVICES, I take a personal pride in providing the best service possible for my clients as well as educating each of them with the most up to date online advertising information & teachings possible.
With over 7 years in the online advertising industry I know a LOT about online advertising, s.e.o., internet marketing, link building, social media branding, web design / development and more, I try not to be a "know it all." In other words, I know that even through out of all my MANY years of studying, online research, books, classes, courses, conventions, audio books, e-book, etc... etc... etc... I am still amazed at how much more there is to learn. Actually, it's quite exciting to realize this because online advertising is a subject that I really enjoy studying.
The internet, technology, software, marketing strategies, platforms, and people are always changing so the good news for me is I will never run out of things to learn in my industry, no matter how much of an expert in online advertising I continue to be. In fact, I think my humbleness toward the extent of my knowledge is one of my strong points. If I felt I "knew it all" or even if I DID "know it all" (as if that is possible) it would be short lived without constantly staying on top of Online Advertising Industry Trends and Changes.
